Welcome
toCulture Observatory,
a new
documentation centre under
construction and a
network in it's beginning.
International
comparative cultural statistics are increasingly asked for
as a
consequence of internationalization and
globalization. Information
about international trends is necessary for planning and evaluation of
national policies.
Researchers are more and more using empirical methods and data. Culture
Statistics Observatory is an initiative with roots in the
European developing project
of comparative culture statistics which started in the middle
of
the 1990s. An initiative is taken to establish an international
documentation centre and Internet portal for Culture Statistics.
This
Observatory will give access to world
wide Culture Statistics and offer
a statistical infrastructure to users in culture policy
practice. But it will also provide a network and a community
for
statisticians and researchers. A
comprehensive purpose for Observatory should be to promote
and maintain the necessity
of comparative statistics. An important topic therefore concerns
statistical
framework, nomenclature and classifications. A gateway with
a web archive, newsletters and links
are other means for a renewed project on Culture Statistics. An
important
matter for the network will be the developing of tools for analysis of
statistics and defining culture indicators.
The
basis for Observatory is formed by
its active members and contact persons.
Former as well as new colleagues are welcome to join our circle. EU has
been enlarged since
the European
project started and the Observatory will cooperate with colleagues
in
countries within the EU and Council of Europe. But
we are also
looking forward a close contact with Unesco Institute of Statistics
and hopefully
the network will attract and embrace professionals in
every part of
the world,
producers as well as users of culture statistics. Of special
importance is to keep in touch with researchers in the field of culture
& media and thus building a bridge between statisticians and
researchers. Observatory
should thus
act as an on line documentation
centre but also as a network with addresses to
statisticians,
researchers and other users of statistics related to
culture.
Note:
This website is under construction, we apologize for any faulties and
other deficiencies.
